40 date night ideas at home
Staying in is a perfectly good date. It is cheaper, nobody has to drive, and you can wear socks. The trick is to make it feel a bit different from every other evening on the couch. Pick one idea, put the phones on the other side of the room for an hour and see how it goes.
Cozy
- Build a blanket fort and watch something from your childhood inside it.
- Make hot chocolate from scratch and rate the toppings.
- Read to each other, one chapter each.
- Do a puzzle with a playlist you made together.
- Have a "slow breakfast for dinner": pancakes, eggs, the good jam.
- Look through old photos and tell the story behind each one.
- Take a bath or a long shower with a speaker and a candle.
- Write down five things you want to do together next year.
Playful
- Play "who of us is more likely to…" and point at each other on three.
- Have a blind snack taste test from the corner store.
- Recreate your first date at home, with props.
- Play a quiz on how well you know each other and keep score.
- Have a dance-off to songs from the year you met.
- Play a card or board game with a silly bet on the result.
- Swipe through a list of movies separately and watch the first one you both liked.
- Give each other a makeover with whatever is in the bathroom.
A little romantic
- Cook a three-course dinner where each of you makes one course in secret.
- Set the table like a restaurant: tablecloth, candles, a handwritten menu.
- Write each other a letter and read them out loud.
- Slow-dance in the kitchen to one song you both love.
- Give each other a massage with a timer, ten minutes each.
- Answer deep questions you never asked each other (we wrote 60 in this guide).
- Look at the stars from a balcony or a window with a stargazing app.
- Plan your dream trip in detail, down to the first dinner there.
Creative
- Paint each other's portraits in 15 minutes.
- Bake something neither of you has made before.
- Make a short video of your week together.
- Write a song or a poem, the cheesier the better.
- Build something from a kit: a model, a terrarium, a LEGO set.
- Rearrange one room together.
- Start a scrapbook or a timeline of your relationship.
- Learn three steps of a new dance from a video.
Almost free
- Have a picnic on the living room floor.
- Do a home workout together, then a big smoothie.
- Have a "museum night" with a free online tour.
- Cook only with what is already in the fridge.
- Have a spa night with homemade face masks.
- Play the "36 questions" style game with your own questions.
- Plan your next month of dates, one per week.
- Turn off every light, light candles and just talk.
How to decide what to do tonight
The hardest part of a date night is often picking one. Two tricks help:
- Each of you shortlists three ideas, then you pick from the overlap or toss a coin.
- Keep a running list of ideas you both like, so you are choosing from a list instead of starting from zero at 8 pm.
Where Axolove fits
Axolove keeps that running list for you. You each swipe date ideas on your own phone, and when you both say yes it is a match and lands in your planned places. The Evening button picks a movie from your watch list and a recipe from your recipes for nights you can't decide. You can also plan a surprise date with hints that unlock at the times you choose.
