How to plan gifts for your partner without spoiling the surprise
"What do you want for your birthday?" is the question that kills a surprise. The answer is usually "nothing" or one thing you then have to buy, and you both know it is coming. A little system during the year fixes this.
Keep a wishlist all year
Most people mention things they want months before a birthday and forget about it a week later. A wishlist catches those moments: a link to a jacket, a book a friend recommended, a kitchen gadget. If you both keep one, gift season turns into picking from a list instead of guessing.
- Add things the moment you see them, with a link and the price.
- Mark the occasion if it matters: birthday, anniversary, holidays or "just because".
- Remove things you bought yourself, so your partner doesn't get a duplicate.
Write down sizes and favorites once
Ring size, shoe size, favorite colors, the flowers they love and the ones they are allergic to. A small card with these saves a lot of sneaky questions:
- Clothing sizes (tops, bottoms, shoes) and ring size
- Favorite colors and materials
- Things they love: a snack, a brand, a scent
- Hard no's: allergies, things they already have too many of
Claim gifts in secret
A shared wishlist has one problem: if your partner can see you bought something from it, the surprise is gone. The fix is a private claim. The giver marks "I'm getting this" and only the giver can see it. The person who wished for it sees nothing, so the list stays a list of wishes and the gift stays a surprise.
Gift ideas when the list runs dry
- An experience from your shared list of places: a class, a concert, a weekend away.
- An upgrade of something they use every day and never replace.
- A planned surprise date, with hints in the days before.
- Something handmade: a photo book of your year, a recipe book of your favorite meals together.
- A contribution to a shared dream: put money toward the trip or the thing you are both saving for.
Where Axolove fits
Axolove has a wishlist for each partner with links, prices, pictures and occasions. Paste a shop link and it fills in the title, price and picture where the shop allows it. When you claim a gift, only you can see the claim. Your partner can't see it in the app, and our server won't show it to them either. Each of you also keeps a "my sizes and favorites" card, and the app reminds your partner a week before your birthday.
